SnowCones is Edmonton's very own winter Autocross competitions held in a big snow covered parking lot at Rad Torque Raceway, just 15 minutes south of Edmonton. Compete just for fun or go for the win in one of the 3 classes! 

What is an Autocross?

An Autocross is a race against the clock (as opposed to wheel-to-wheel) around a unique course defined by pylons. Click Here to learn more. 

All are welcome to participate at these events, from the complete novice with their daily driver to the seasoned pro with a fully built race car. No racing experience or special equipment, other than a helmet, is required.

Awards are handed out to winners at every event!

To compete at this event you will need:​

  1. A driver license

  2. A mechanically sound car

  3. A 10 year old or newer Snell certified M or SA / ECE certified 22.05 helmet

Vehicle Requirements:

  • Production-model passenger vehicles, light trucks, and SUVs only

  • Vehicle must wider than it's tall. Width is from outer most edge of the tires. Height is from highest point of vehicle to the ground.

  • Must not be leaking oil or any fluids onto the ground

  • All loose interior & exterior items must be removed from the vehicle included items that have the potential to become unattached. 

  • Tires must be in good condition 

  • Mechanical condition and safety of the vehicle is the responsibility of the competitor

Classes & Rules

AWD Class

  • Open to All wheel drive & 4x4 Vehicles

FWD Class

  • Open to Front wheel Drive Vehicles

RWD Class

  • Open to Rear Wheel Drive Vehicles

Tire Rules

  • Street legal winter rated tires only

  • Studded tires are allowed only if your drive to the event on them! 

Schedule:

  • 8:00 am Gates open

  • 10:30 am Drivers meeting

  • 10:45 am Competition begins

  • 4:00 pm Awards

  • 5:00 pm Cleaned up and off site

 

Course: 

  • A pylon marked time trial course is setup for drivers to race through in the large parking lot at RAD Torque Raceway.

Practice Runs:

  • 30 km/h max speed

  • Taken at the start of the first heat

  • 2 runs given

  • Learn the course & pick your lines

  • Must remain a minimum 10 car lengths distance from car ahead 

  • No passing

  • Speeding or dangerous driving will get you disqualified 

 

Competition runs:

  • 3 run groups 

  • One group drives, One group marshals, One takes a break

  • Each group get two heats. 4 runs per heat, for a total of 8 runs.

  • Cars will be launched every ~25 seconds 

  • No passing

Passengers:

  • Only 1 allowed

  • Must be wearing same safety gear as driver

  • Must sign the event waiver

  • Must be of 16 years of age or older

Scoring:

Timing:

  • 8 timed runs per driver

  • Your fastest run from both heats is combined & is used to determine your finishing position.

Penalties:

  • Each standing pylon hit = 2 second penalty

  • Wrong direction/missed gate = Run DQ'd

  • Not finishing a run = Run DQ'd

Reruns:

  • You catch up to a car and it slows you down (No passing allowed) 

  • Timing Issues

  • Course/Cone Issues

  • If a pylon is out of place you can either slow down and honk your horn to get a rerun or use it to your advantage

Awards

  • Top 3 in each Class

  • Slowest driver

Results:

  • Live results viewable by tapping the red Live Results  button at top of page

  • Final results to be posted up on website shortly after event finish on the Results Page

When it's your groups turn to Drive:

  • Line up single file in the staging lane. 

  • A car will be launched every ~25 seconds 

  • Once finished your run, slowly line back up in the staging lane. Repeat until you have completed all your runs for that heat.

  • Once completed your final run head back into the pits and get ready to go Marshall 

When it's your turn to Marshall:

  • Head out to one of the designated Marshall stations. 

  • Call in any cones that are hit by cars with the station's radio

  • Reset the cones when safe to do so

  • Red Flag any incoming cars if there is an incident ahead

  • Stay off the track and keep a safe distance away when not resetting cones

  • *If you're new, don't worry, an experienced person will be at each station!
